DUTIES:
These positions are located in the Medicine Service, Optometry Section of the VA Medical Center in Spokane, WA. As a Health Technician (Ophthalmology) you will independently complete a variety of ophthalmologic tests and procedures. Your

duties may include, but are not limited to the following:
Completes various special tests for ophthalmology; C ommunicates with patients to triage concerns; Obtains patient history to assist in patient care; P repares patients for laser procedures; Prepares patients for various minor procedures; Prepares patients for post-op examinations; Assists with fee-basis eye care; Assists with coordination of optometry related surge! ry; Completes administrative duties as needed; Manages the reusable medical equipment functions; U tilizes VA computer applications in the performance of duties.

Work

Schedule :
Both positions are full-time and Monday through Friday. One (1) position is from 8:30a to 5:00p and one (1) position is from 6:00a to 2:30p.

qualifi! cations:
BASIC REQUIREMENT

ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY: In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), No person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. You must be proficient in basic written and spoken English in order to meet the requirements of this position.

This position includes a Selective Placement Factor (skill, knowledge, ability or other worker characteristic basic to - and essential for - satisfactory performance of the job). Selective Placement Factors are a prerequisite to appointment and represent minimum requirements for a position. Applicants who do not meet it are ineligible for further consideration. The

special tests in an eye/ophthalmology clinic:
Humphrey Visual Fields, Color Vision Testing, Amsler Grid Optical Coher! ent Tomography, Anterior Segment Photography, Fundus Photography, Pachymetery, A and B Scans, Corneal Topography and IOL master.Â"

EXPERIENCE:
In addition to the requirements above, candidates must have at least 1 (one) year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level in the Federal Service.

Specialized experience is defined as experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of this position. Examples of specialized experience include: completing various tests for optometry, communicating with patients, preparing patients for procedures, assisting with ophthalmology related surgeries, and completing administrative duties to support the eye clinic.

A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wis! hing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the na! ture of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.

SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR EXPERIENCE: (COPY OF TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED WITH YOUR APPLICATION PACKAGE)

Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelorÂ's degree, with major study or at least 24 hours in subjects directly related to being a Health Technician (Ophthalmology). This education must have been obtained in an accredited business or technical school, junior college, college or university. To qualify based solely on education alone, you must include a copy of your transcript with your name, name of school, degree earned and date, grades earned, credit hours, major(s), and grade point average or class ranking with your resume or application form.

NOTE : Only education in excess of the first 60 semester hours (i.e., beyond the second year) is creditable toward meeting the specialized exp! erience requirement. One full academic year of study (30 semester hours) beyond the second year is equivalent to 6 months of specialized experience at the GS-5 level.

COMBINING EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE (COPY OF TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED

Combinations of successfully completed education and experience may be used to meet total qualification requirements.

You will be rated on the following Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other characteristics (KSAOs) as part of the assessment

questionnaire for this position:
Ability to independently complete eye exam entrance testing. Ability to complete an eye exam for special testing. Skills to conduct a telephone triage. Ability to assist in minor ophthalmic surgery. Knowledge of ophthalmic medications and supplies.

Physical Requirements: The work of this position requires considerable periods of standing and walking with occasional bending ! and sitting. Some assisting or lifting patients is also required. The t! echnician must also be able to work for sustained periods under pressure; requiring flexibility in the schedule with breaks taken when available.
