This job is responsible for providing direct patient care as part of a perioperative (operating room) team, assisting the operating surgeon by performing a! ctivities such as maintaining hemostasis, providing wound exposure, manipulating tissues with surgical instrumentation (e.g. suturing, wound closure) and other related tasks.

An incumbent uses acquired and intuitive knowledge to anticipate, prevent and/or respond to circumstances that could compromise the patient’s well-being; documents patient/family pre-operative care and teaching, operative roles following surgical procedure, post-operative care/assessment and discharge planning in accordance with established guidelines. Work is performed under the direction of an operating surgeon and within scope of practice.

Essential Duties:
Provides knowledge-based technical assistance to the operating surgeon during operative procedure within scope of licensure and according to state regulation and facility/practice protocols.

Prepares and administers medications perioperatively, as directed by the operating surgeon and anesthesiologist; assi! sts with patient positioning, skin preparation and draping;
Provides and maintains exposure of the operative site through appropriate use of instruments, retractors (e.g. by placing and moving the retractors when necessary, with awareness to anatomical structures), retraction suturing, suctioning, packing and sponging techniques;

Provides and maintains hemostasis to reduce potential for fluid volume deficit by clamping and/or ligating vessels, using electrosurgical or laser units, applying direct pressure, applying chemical agents that promote coagulation and other means as directed by the operating surgeon; selects and uses the optimal hemostatic mechanism(s) depending on tissue characteristics and specific situation;

Uses surgical instruments skillfully in ways consistent with their design and purpose as directed by the operating surgeon; demonstrates manual dexterity in the appropriate use surgical instrumentation; places drains as surgically indicated; assists with cannulation and decanulation procedures! ;

Handles and dissects tissues, in collaboration with the operating surgeon, to reduce potential for injury or compromised blood supply and facilitate an optimum surgical outcome;

Assists in closure of wound or independently closes wound under the direction of operating surgeon, using suture and suturing

techniques that promote wound healing; sutures muscle, fascia, subcutaneous and skin tissue, selecting the appropriate suture material and suturing technique(s) for the type of closure to be performed

Qualifications

Education/

Experience:
BSN degree, successful completion of an accredited/approved post-graduate RN First Assistant education program (acceptable to the Association of Operating Room Nurses [AORN] and that meets the statues, regulations and organizational standards relevant to RNFA credentialing standards), and four year of diversified OR nursing work experience (e.g. scrub and/or circul! ator) in an acute care setting that would demonstrate attainment of the! requisite job knowledge/skills.

License/Certification:
Current licensure as a registered nurse by the Washington State Board of Nursing.

Certification in operating room nursing (CNOR).

Certification as an RN-First Assistant (CRNFA).

Current BLS Certification.
