JOB SUMMARY: Vacancy Identification Number (VIN) 892323OUR MISSION: To fulfill President Lincoln's promise - 'To care for him who shall have borne the battle, and for his widow, and his orphan' - by serving and honoring the men and women who are America's Veterans.DUTIES: The Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU), located in the Surgery Service Line in Seattle, is a 10 bed intensive care unit specializing predominantly in cardiac surgery, vascular surgery, neurosurgery and abdominal surgery. Pa! tient populations include: coronary occlusion, vascular occlus! ion, subdural hematomas and cancer. The population ranges from the older adult to the geriatric. The geriatric patient population is likely to present with chronic medical conditions, change in mental status, and/or functional decline.

The Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS):
serves as an expert practitioner, educator and in-house consultant in critical care nursingacts as a role model of expert and ethical critical care nursing when providing direct services to patients functions as a leader in the critical and acute care areas by leading project teams, task forces, research projects and regular committee meetings which contribute directly to the improvement of patient careprovides basic and advanced nursing and interdisciplinary education and training for new critical care, progressive care and acute care nurses as well as advanced training and development in complex patient care issuesfacilitates interdisciplinary care of complex surgical and critically i! ll patients throughout the continuum of surgical illness from operation to transfers between units, to discharge when individual patient care requires advanced nursing practiceprovides consultation as well as direct services for patients with complex disease issues such as pain management, wound care and post operative rehabilitationKEY REQUIREMENTSMust pass pre-employment examination.Designated and/or Random Drug Testing required.Background and/or Security Investigation required.Must be proficient in written and spoken English
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED: BASIC REQUIREMENTS: U.S. citizenship. Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.Full unrestricted Licensure, Certification, or Registration requiredGraduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by th! e applicant: The National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NL! NAC) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6)Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Masters degree in Nursing with clinical specialty! in medical/surgical or critical care nursing
  • Minimum of 3 years critical care nursing experience
  • Demonstrated skills in developing staff to meet the needs of patients in a variety of age groups
  • Ability to be flexible and adjust to changing demands
  • Demonstrated skills in teaching utilizing adult learning principles
  • Leadership characterized by adapting to rapid changes

If you are using foreign education to meet qualification requirements, you must send a Certificate of Foreign Equivalency with your ! transcript in order to receive credit for that education.Physical Requirements: This position involves considerable amount of standing (up to 2 hours), walking (up to 6 hours), stooping, bending, reaching, lifting, and turning. It requires restraining confused clients, repositioning patients, assisting with transfers from wheelchairs/stretchers and transporting them to other departments or facilities. Mechanical devices are available and are required to be used for heavy or difficult to lift clients. The work may involve pushing or lifting in excess of 45 pounds and going up and down flights of stairs. The position requires visual (corrected to 20/30 or better with color discrimination) and auditory acuity at a level to provide safe and effective nursing care. The position requires the nurse to work for periods of time with arms above shoulder level or with neck in a fully flexed or extended position. The nurse may occasionally be exposed to patients who are combative secon! dary to delirium, dementia or psychiatric disorders. The nurse many be ! exposed to infected patients and contaminated materials and may be required to don protective clothing in isolation situations or operative/invasive procedures.
