Founded in 1961 by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the Washington National Primate Research Center (WaNPRC) provides specialized resources for nonhuman primate research studies applicable to the solution of human health problems. The Primate Center currently has an outstanding opportunity for a Research Technologist 2 . This individual will provide comprehensive research support for investigators conducting research using nonhuman primates (NHPs) at the WaNPRC. This position provides an essential function by coordinating and performing routine scientific work for research projects utilizing NHPs. Multiple projects involving different experimental protocols and schedules are conducted concurrently. This position requires excellent organizational skills plus the flexibility to work in an environment with constantly shifting and occasionally conflicting priorities is required.

Expected areas of applicable skills will be in performing experimental procedures on NHPs such as blood draws, administration of experimental and clinical drugs, minor surgical procedures and assistance with major surgeries, and monitoring of vital signs at the hands-on level under deadline pressu! re. Attention to detail in data acquisition and recording is also required. High priority is placed on communication and collaboration with other staff such as the psychological well-being coordinator, husbandry staff, and veterinary personnel for care of individual animals. Frequent interaction with supervisory and research staff is also required.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Research Support

  • Performance of research projects including identifying animals, set-up of supplies and equipment required to perform approved procedures and performing the procedures.
  • Prepare supplies needed to perform research specimen requests, perform collection, package and distribute samples.
  • Perform all standard research techniques approved for non-human primates according to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Maintenance of an internal email account and response to all client questions and requests; review of the Research Supp! ort Services schedule; processing of sample requests and scheduling of ! the procedures.
  • Interact with clients, investigators and Center staff efficiently and professionally with minimum miscommunications.
  • Sedate animals using controlled substances including placement of IV catheters, vena-puncture blood draws and bone marrow aspirations.
  • Administer anesthetics (IV and inhalation) and monitor the animals’ vital signs and level of anesthesia.
  • Address emergencies by maintaining airway by placing endotracheal tube and administering emergency drugs.
  • Use established aseptic techniques to perform minor surgical procedures such as lymph node biopsies and skin and bone biopsies and their follow-up care.
  • Maintain and support complex IV tether projects.
  • In necropsy, serve as assistant to the dissector and perform various techniques.
  • Assist investigators in their tissue collection following their detailed protocols which may include preparation of tissue for cryopreservation, and var! ious other media solutions or fixatives.
  • Complete and submit records of sample collections, experimental procedures, drugs and controlled substance dosages administered, and treatment room logbooks.
  • Record personnel time for re-charging to investigators.
Animal Research Management System Data (ARMS) Entry

  • Enter data of experimental procedures and drugs administered to animals on research projects into the Animal Research Management System.
  • Assist with personnel time billing and UWMC billing as assigned
Clinical Monitoring

  • Monitor animals for clinical signs of disease, either experimentally related or spontaneous and reports to the clinical veterinary staff.
  • Administer research related drugs and clinical treatments as directed.
Record Keeping & Inventory Maintenance

  • Receive and keep records for Schedule II & III controlled drugs.
  • Maintain, sanit! ize, and stock supplies and equipment in procedure rooms.
Ot! her Duties

  • Attend meetings, lectures, and training sessions.
  • Perform the duties required of Essential Personnel members in the event of an emergency.
  • Stay current on all required training.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS:
Bachelor's Degree in an appropriate field of technology or science, PLUS one year of research experience equivalent to Research Technologist I OR one year of full-time post-baccalaureate college in an appropriate field of science or technology. Professional level experience may be substituted, year-for-year, for the formal academic degree.

Two years of working experience with animals in research, to include some experience with non-human primates.

Equivalent education/experience ! will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.

Condition of Employment:
Employment is contingent upon successful completion of health assessment at the UW's Employee Health Clinic. The health assessment may include but is not limited to tuberculosis clearance, measles clearance, serum banking, immunizations such as tetanus and vaccinia, physical exam and/or review of work hea! lth history, x-rays, and/or assessment to wear positive or negative res! piratory protective equipment. These health assessments will be repeated periodically during work assignment.

This position may be required to work with and take specific precautions against and/or be immunized against potentially infectious agents. Specific precautions may include wearing respirators and/or protective clothing. Employee is personally responsible for following health & safety and security policies/procedures, and staying current on all required training. Bloodborne pathogen training and compliance with all WaNPRC and UW security policies is also mandatory. This position involves handling nonhuman primates and human pathogenic organisms. The ability to work in an Animal Biosafety Level-3 containment facility may be required.

Punctuality and regular, predictable attendance are essential job functions of this position.

Appointment to this position is contingent upon obtaining satisfactory results from a criminal background check.
