Position Overview
The Southern Region Security Specialist position was established to monitor unusual incidents that occur throughout the correctional facilities that comprise the northern region in which safety and security has been compromised. This position is responsible for the supervision of the security specialist at each facility in the northern region. This position also serves as the Team Leader for teams conducting confidential security reviews, reviews after unusual incidents at IDOC facilities, outside hospitals, courthouses, etc. This exciting position also prepares comprehensive written reports upon conclusion of each review and provides recommendations for corrective action for any deficiencies noted during the review. Additionally, this position is responsible for the review of command posts in facilities providing recommendations for preparedness and functionality. The ideal candidate would be a self-motivated, task oriented, organized individual with strong interpersonal and communication skills. A background in policy and procedure development and strategic planning would be a plus for our ideal candidate. This is an opportunity to work in a fast-paced job with an incredible team.
Job Responsibilities
- Serves as Southern Region Security Specialist.
- Serves as Team Leader of specially assigned staff in conducting Critical Incident Reviews following unusual incidents.
- Conducts reviews, audits and provides evaluations of processes and procedures performed by Facility Security Specialists.
- Conducts reviews of facility Command Posts, providing recommendations and positive/ negative feedback as warranted in regard to site preparedness, functionality and Directive compliance.
- Conducts reviews of Critical Incident drills, including Escape, Fire, and Mass Casualty, ensuring frequency and elements are compliant with Directives.
- Conducts and participates in meetings.
- Completes verifications of procedures at assigned facilities.
- Works with Intelligence Unit in the identification of information involving individuals or groups of individuals who pose a threat to the safety and security of the public, staff, individuals in custody, and the facility in accordance with policies as it pertains to the escape risk level of individuals in custody deemed a threat.
- Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.
Minimum Qualifications
- Requires knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to completion of four (4) years of college, preferably with courses in law enforcement, criminology, social or behavioral sciences, penology or a related field.
- Requires three (3) years of progressively responsible experience in law enforcement public or private organization, a correctional facility, or related field.
Preferred Qualifications (In Order of Significance)
- Prefers at least five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in law enforcement public or private organization, a correctional facility, or a related field.
- Prefers at least two (2) years of experience developing policies for security programs in a correctional center.
- Prefers at least two (2) years of experience assigning escape risk levels to individuals in custody.
- Prefers at least two (2) years of experience determining facility structure issues to reduce risk of escape from a correctional facility.
- Prefers at least two (2) years of experience participating as a team member on a security team in a correctional setting.
- Prefers at least two (2) years of experience conducting critical incident drills for a correctional facility.
- Prefers at least one (1) year of experience in conducting critical incident reviews following an unusual incident for a correctional facility.
- Prefers at least two (2) years of experience working with an intelligence entity identifying individuals who pose a threat to the safety and security of the public or to anyone or anything inside a correctional facility.
- Prefers at least five (5) years of professional experience supervising correctional staff.
Conditions of Employment
- Requires a valid, appropriate driver’s license and the ability to travel statewide.
- Requires the ability to be on-call.
- Requires the ability to work overtime on as needed basis.
- Requires the ability to carry a state cell phone.
- Requires the incumbent to carry a gun while on duty, qualify with gun on an annual basis, and possess a valid, current Firearms Owner Identification (FOID) card.
- Requires passing of Critical Incident Command Course.
- Requires the passing of Instructional Methods or Train the Trainer within the first 12 months of employment in this position.
- Requires the passing of the following National Incident Management System (NIMS) courses within the first 12 months of employment in this position: 100, 200, 300, 400, 700, and 800.
- Requires ability to pass the IDOC/IDJJ background check.
- Requires ability to pass a drug screen. On January 1, 2020, the Cannabis Regulation and Tax Act made it legal for residents over the age of 21 to produce, consume and sell cannabis in Illinois. Please note that although the law has changed, the Department will continue to enforce the Department’s zero tolerance Drug Testing policy. The use of unauthorized drugs, including cannabis, by an employee, regardless of the position held is prohibited.
