The University of Washington Department of Pathology is a dynamic organization, one of the best in the country that has had a consistent level of high achievement in all of its activities. Our educational and training programs include the Pathology Residency Training Program, the Ph.D. Program in the Molecular Basis of Disease, and the teaching of medical students, postdoctoral research fellows and clinical fellows.
The Department of Pathology has an out! standing opportunity for a Research Scientist Engineer 1. The ! Research Scientist in this position will perform research on several projects involving mouse models of human kidney disease.
The Essential Job Functions Include the Following:
- Handle complex breeding strategies of a mouse colony containing more than 12 strains of mice; maintain recordkeeping of mouse colony.
- Prepare DNA and genotype mice.
- Handle mice, including necropsies and minor surgery.
- Process tissues and biologic specimens (human, non-human primate and rodent).
- Prepare high quality RNA for use in microarray experiments.
- Perform independent experiments involving immunohistochemistry and in situ hybridization on tissue sections. Analyze and document results.
- Use a microscope, camera and computer software to perform morphometric measurements
- Read relevant scientific literature and present data to research group.
- Assist in experiment design and planning.
- Perform ! general laboratory maintenance.
- Perform related duties as required.
Requirements:
Bachelorâs degree in biology or a biological science plus one year of laboratory experience; ability to handle mice and breeding colony and strong record keeping skills. Molecular biology skills such as PCR, RNA isolation, in situ hybridization and gene microarray analysis; ability to work collaboratively with a research team; strong interpersonal skills; excellent verbal and written communication skills; ability to work with limited supervision; ability to prepare DNA and genotype and necropsy mice; ability to isolate glomeruli from mouse kidneys and prepare high quality RNA from glomeruli; ability to use equipment to perform morphometric measurements of various molecules; ability to work in a diverse and team environment; or equivalent education and experience.
Equivalent edu! cation/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except! where there are legal requirements such as license/certification/registration.
Desired:
Strong background in renal pathology desired, with a focus on murine models of kidney disease.
