Founded in 1961 by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the Washington National Primate Research Center (WaNPRC) provides specialized resources for nonhuman primate research studies applicable to the solution of significant human health problems. The Primate Center currently has an outstanding opportunity for a Research Scientist 2 . This individual will provide comprehensive research support for investigators conducting research using nonhuman primates (NHPs) at the WaNPRC. This position provides an essential function by coordinating and performing routine scientific work for research projects utilizing NHPs. Multiple projects involving different experimental protocols and schedules are conducted concurrently. This position requires excellent organizational skills plus the flexibility to work in an environment with constantly shifting and occasionally conflicting priorities is required.
Expected areas of applicable skills will be in performing experimental procedures on NHPs such as blood draws, administration of experimental and clinical drugs, minor surgical procedures and assistance with major surgeries, and monitoring of vital signs at the hands-on level under deadline pressure. Attention to detail in data acquisition and recording is also required. High priority is placed on communication and collaboration with other staff such as the psychological well-being coordinator, husbandry staff, and veterinary personnel for care of individual animals. Frequent interaction with supervisory and research staff is also required.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Research Support Services:
- Perform routine and research specific procedures including blood draws, inoculations and biopsies according to established research project protocols and schedules.
- Arrange for animal fasting, setting up & cleaning up, submitting appropriate paperwork, and distributing samples to required locations.
- Set up for and assist with major surgeries and necropsies and prepare tissues for distribution.
- Perform anesthesia on NHPs for animal surgical and experimental procedures.
- Interact with husbandry, psychological well-being and veterinary staff concerning issues with individual research project animals.
- Perform the duties required of Essential Personnel members in the event of an emergency.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Record, correlate and prepare study related data for distribution to investigators.
- Maintain, analyze, and distribute records of blood work and details of experimental procedures to research groups and other WaNPRC teams as necessary.
- Enter data of experimental procedures and drugs administered to animals on research projects into the Animal Research Management System.
- Assist with personnel time billing.
- Acquire new skills to perform new animal-related techniques as required by specific project assignments. Train others as appropriate.
- Stay current on all required training.
- Manage research projects including participation in meetings with research team to plan details of project performance and discuss project results and future directions.
Requirements:
Bachelorâs degree, plus two years of experience working with laboratory animals, including at least one year working with non-human primates (NHPs) in a biomedical research facility setting.
Must have knowledge of animal welfare regulations, bio-safety principles and practices, radiation safety, controlled substances regulations, and hazardous substance shipping requirements.
Must be able to perform routine sedations with NHPs.
Must have the ability to coordinate and manage multiple complex projects simultaneously, within institutional standard operating procedures, and approved research protocols.
Demonstrated ability work well both independently and in collaboration with diverse staff and research investigators.
Excellent written and oral communication skills.
Proficient in use of Microsoft WORD, EXCEL, OUTLOOK,
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
Desired:
Knowledge of anatomy and physiology of non-human primates
Experience working with animals on tether systems
Experience in NHP surgical procedures
Experience providing anesthesia to NHPs in a surgical setting

Condition of Employment:
Employment is contingent upon successful completion of health assessment at the UW's Employee Health Clinic. The health assessment may include but is not limited to tuberculosis clearance, measles clearance, serum banking, immunizations such as tetanus and vaccinia, physical exam and/or review of work health history, x-rays, and/or assessment to wear positive or negative respiratory protective equipment. These health assessments will be repeated periodically during work assignment.
This position may be required to work with and take specific precautions against and/or be immunized against potentially infectious agents. Specific precautions may include wearing respirators and/or protective clothing. Employee is personally responsible for following health & safety and security policies/procedures, and staying current on all required training. Bloodborne pathogen training and compliance with all WaNPRC and UW security policies is also mandatory. This position involves handling nonhuman primates and human pathogenic organisms. The ability to work in an Animal Biosafety Level-3 containment facility may be required.
A satisfactory outcome from a criminal background verification may be required prior to hire.
