Scrubs on all surgical specialties, aides in the preparation and discharge of the surgical patient, including patient transport and transfer. Participates in Q.A. improvement activities, meets certification and educational requirements and demonstrates knowledge and compliance with the AST Standards of Practice and AORN's Standards and Recommended Practices.QUALIFICATIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

Actively seeks professional development by participating in community and/or professional organizations.Identifies and reports to the Director, or his/her designee, conditions that may exist and could negatively affect the health, safety and well being of patients or coworkers.Assists other members of team with terminal cleanup of room, in readiness for next patient.Attends, contributes and documents 75% of staff meetings. Attends, documents and contributes to 90% of staff meetings a year.Checks supplies and equipment needed for surgical procedure; ma! intains knowledge of surgical preference (scrub, gown, and glove). Sets up sterile table with instruments, sutures, blades, electrosurgical equipment, suction, and solutions needed for procedure.Observes patient for unusual responses. Identifies unusual or emergency situations and utilizes sound judgment to correct and institute established procedures, in a calm and efficient manner.Counts sponges, needles, and instruments with circulator prior to procedure and before incision is closed.
Checks trays and equipment for completeness. Counts contain signature of surgical technologist on operative record. Events are factually documented and records are legible and complete. Unusual events are reported to circulator.Maintains highest standard of sterile technique during procedure.
Cleans and prepares instruments for terminal sterilization. Helps to drape the sterile field. Prepares sterile dressings. Follow rules of asepsis; conscientiously carries out contamin! ation control measures.
Manages contaminated instruments and s! upplies during and after operative procedure to prevent spread of infection. Verifies exposure to sterilization process and integrity of sterile packaging. Opens supplies aseptically, according to Association of Operating Room Nurse (AORN) standards. Anticipates surgeon's needs, such as instruments, sponges sutures, and places them in his/her hand in a manner that the surgeon need not divert attention from the operative field, as reported by feedback from surgeons.
Displays dexterity in the use of surgical instruments throughout the procedure. Before each surgery, checks autoclave tape for type and evidence of sterilization process. Check expiration dates before use. Checks wrappers or packaging for patency.
Checks for 'turned' indicators in all steamed trays, as observed by Supervisor.Before each surgery, checks all labels of solution or drugs placed on the field with the circulating nurse. Supports and enforces infection control practices, including body! substance isolation and the use of personal protective equipment. Complies with infection control policies and procedures. Uses proper transfer techniques and body mechanics.Appropriately collects all specimens for laboratory analysis, as ordered by the surgeon.Demonstrates ability to 'breakdown' room and deliver used equipment/ instruments to the dirty area in accepted manner.
Disposes sharps in proper receptacle. Offers suggestions/solutions for improvement of current methods of room breakdown.Adheres to the Association of Surgical Technologist's (AST) code of ethics at all times in relationship to patients and all members of the healthcare team. Maintains professional standards for conduct, patient care and patient confidentiality. Reports any unethical conduct or practice of health care team members to proper authority.Displays loyalty to administration and to the hospital.
Refrains from discussing hospital problems with, or in the presence of, the pa! tient, family and customers. Discourages misinformation/rumors about Ha! rrison Medical Center in a public setting, as self reported.Acts as a patient advocate at all times. Recognizes that each patient is a unique, holistic human being with individual needs. Explains all procedures being done and maintains a calm environment.

Notifies circulator of surgeon's request for changes/additions to preference card.Checks all equipment for working order and reports or corrects unusual conditions. Inspects emergency equipment and supplies for condition and quality on a daily basis. Consistently meets patient needs in the most costâ"ef! fective manner. Opens supplies only as called for; double checks costly supply needs with surgeon and circulator.
Substitutes appropriate materials, if item is on back order.Demonstrates the willingness and ability to rotate assignments, as appropriate.
